ST THOMAS’ BOYS’ SCHOOL KIDDERPORE, established in 1789, is an English Medium Anglo Indian School and is declared as a Christian Minority Education Institution, primarily for Catholic boys with provision for admission of non-Catholic boys too. It is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.

A student admitted into the hostel will not leave the hostel for minimum two years.

Commerce minimum aggregate of 60%, all subjects taken together, in class 10

Students from other Boards may be admitted provisionally first and then confirmed after getting eligibility certificate from our Examination Board, on application.

History of the school
St Thomas’ School, founded in the year 1789 for the English speaking community of Calcutta, is the oldest school in West Bengal and the second oldest in India. It traces its direct antecedents back to 1729 as the Charity School. Originally called The Calcutta Free School when it first started in 1789, it provided free education with complete hostel facilities for indigent and orphan Anglo-Indian boys and girls. The original

property on what was then The Calcutta Free School was given up in exchange for the present campus of over 20 acres which was once the residence of Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India. This exchange of property was subsequently codified in The Bengal Act XII of 1923, as also the composition of the Board of Governors and the aims of the Institution. This school is unique in that it is the only known school to be guided by an act of Government.

The President of India is the traditional Patron and its affairs are controlled by a strong and influential Board of Governors as determined by the St Thomas’ Schools Act of 1923. His Grace, the Bishop of Calcutta, is the Chairman of the Board of Governors. The Master of the Calcutta Traders Association is also an ex-officio member. The Board has representatives from the Government of West Bengal, the Bengal Chambers of Commerce, the Anglo-Indian Association, the Vestries of St Paul’s Cathedral, St John’s Church and St Stephen’s Church. There are five co-opted members which include elected representative of the teaching staff.

Within the statutory framework of the St Thomas’ Board of Governors, the School is administered in its day-to-day affairs by the Principal of the Boys’ School who is assisted by the Vice Principal and the Head of Junior Department (classes 1-5).
