TOPCHANCHI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - Jharkhand
Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary is a small sanctuary located in the state of Jharkhand. Even though
this sanctuary is very small, the wildlife here has never witnessed any sort of inconvenience.
Flora
Forest type: Arid mixed deciduous forest, arid Peninsular Sal forest and patches of grasslands.
Trees: Asan, Bamboo, Bijasal, Dhow, Karam, Kendu, Piar, Semal, Sidha, Siris, etc.
Fauna
Leopard, Chital, Jungle Cat, Barking Deer, Jackal, Fox, Wild Boar, Wild Dog, Langur, and Mongoose.
Avian Fauna
Resident birds: pond herons, bronze winged jacanas, swamp partridges, egrets and others.
Migratory birds: pochards, coots, red crested pochards, etc.
Getting there
Dhandad railway station and Gomoh Junction are the closest railway stations to Topchanchi Wildlife
Sanctuary. The nearest airports to the sanctuary are located in Patna (about 325km) and in Ranchi
(about 169km). Dhanbad is the nearest bus terminal. Regular taxi and Chartered bus services are
available between Dhanbad and Patna, Ranchi, Bokaro and other cities and towns of Jharkhand.
Tourist Information
With prior reservation, visitors can find accommodation at Jharia Water Board’s Inspection
Bungalow and at The Lake House Topchanchi. Tourists can also opt to stay in the PWD Inspection
Bungalow and the Circuit House at Dhanbad.
All visitors have to be accompanied by a trekker cum guide inside the forest. Night driving, blowing
of horns and entry of heavy vehicles inside the sanctuary are prohibited. Always park your vehicles in
the middle of the forest track and alight from your vehicles only when instructed by your guide.
Topchanchi Lake is an ideal place to spot different migratory birds during the winter season. The
historic city of Gomoh, from where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on the 18th Jan 1941 boarded a
train for his historical exodus from India, is located only 6km away.
