TAMOR PINGLA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - Chhattisgarh

Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary is named after the Pingla Nalla or stream and the Tamor Hill, which are two most important features of this area. It is nestled along the state border with Uttar Pradesh in the state of Chhattisgarh. Tamor Pingla Sanctuary is situated about 35km away from Surajpur and 94km from Ambikapur. Moran River, which empties into the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar in Uttar Pradesh, passes through this forest area. The sanctuary was set-up in the year 1978.

Flora
Forest Type: Mixed deciduous, bamboo and sal forests.
Trees: Arjuna, sal, laurel, harad, bahera, East Indian ebony, axlewood and Indian Kino Tree.

Fauna
Leopards, chitals, tigers, 4-horned antelope, striped hyenas, sambar deer, jackal, chinkara, foxes, barking deer, sloth bears, wild boars, blue bulls, cobras, python, etc.
As per the 1997 census data, there are about 15 leopards and 11 tigers in this sanctuary.

Avian Fauna
Brown jungle fowl, red jungle fowl, green pigeons and numerous other species of multi-hued migratory birds.

Getting there
Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary is a virgin natural forest reserve of Chhattisgarh and its communication network is not that well developed. The nearest airports to the sanctuary are at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Ranchi in Jharkhand. Closest railheads are at Bishrampur and Surajpur.

Tourist Information
Tourists and researchers can find standard accommodation at the forest guest houses at Ambikapur and Ramkola. Very few visit the Tamor Pingla Sanctuary as this sanctuary is a bit inaccessible. Visitors are advised to carry their own food and water provisions along with them inside the sanctuary. Avoid flash photography, listening to music on your ear phones and wearing flashy clothes and perfumes inside the sanctuary.
