SOMESHWARA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - Karnataka
Named after the nearby famous Someshwara Temple, Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is located on
Mangalore-Karkala-Agumbe Road in the Udupi district of Karnataka. It is nestled at the base of the
Western Ghats approximately 40 km from Udupi.
Notification: Wildlife sanctuary on 5th June, 1974.
Flora
Forest cover: moist deciduous forests, semi evergreen and evergreen forests
Trees: Ceylon oak, Golum, Hopea parviflora, Lophopetalum wightanium and Aini.
Fauna
Tiger, Lion Tailed Macaque, Gaur, Leopard, Sambar, Wild Pig, Monitor lizards, King Cobras, Pythons,
Jackal, etc.
Avian Fauna
Ceylon Frogmouth, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Malabar Trogon and Malabar Pied hornbill.
Getting There
The closest railway stations are at Shimoga and Udupi. The nearest airport is in Mangalore. The
nearest major bus terminal and transport centre are at Shimoga.
From Bangalore the road route is Bangalore-Shimoga-Agumbe-Tirthahalli-Someshwara Wildlife
Sanctuary. From Mangalore the route is - Mudbidri- Karkala-Hebri- Someshwara sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Hotel services and guests houses located near the sanctuary offer comfortable accommodation
facilities. Trekking, river rafting on the River Seeta and nature camp (known as Seetanadi Herpeto
Camp) are popular activities here. Necessary entry permit has to be secured from the forest
authorities for trekking within the sanctuary.
Kudlu Theertha falls, Onake Abbi Falls, Jomlu Theertha falls, Someshwara Temple and Agumbe
Sunset point are some of the popular places of interest in and around Someshwara sanctuary.
