Positive sides of lockdown
Positive sides of lockdown
The lockdown has added the 'slow motion' feature to our lives, but having said that there is
no denying the fact that it has brought to the fore the better side of the masses. Though we
did have to stay within the confines of our houses; yet we were actually polishing our
personalities. This phase, due to the pandemic, might have limited our physical boundaries,
but our mental boundaries have actually been extended considerably.
The first most apparent change was within the families; it was no longer the traditional
practice of the mother doing all the household chores. Everyone in the family, be it the
father, in-laws or children; all put in their contribution to make the house a happy place.
One of the added duties was the cleaning of the house and its surroundings more frequently
than it used to be done. And not to forget the sanitization process which was
enthusiastically and sincerely done by almost all the family members.
It consequently enhanced the quality of the family bond. Where people hardly had time to
spend with the family because of their busy daily schedules, now they spent almost twenty-
four hours with each other. It became a time when the inmates of the household began to
understand each other and what problems each faced. The people who have transferable
jobs, or stay away from their families, got the time to be with them for a long time.
Apart from this, as a means to look for recreation or preferably in the bid to look for
employment, a lot of people turned their gaze to their talents. It has, in fact, become a joke
on the social media platforms that the lockdown has made everyone either a chef or a
singer. But on a serious note, it should be considered as a positive effect of the 'house
arrest'. More and more individuals are trying their hands at cooking various cuisines, and
some are even adding their own innovations to them. The best part of all this realization
and acquisition of new talent is that people are relentlessly sharing all of their endeavours in
the virtual world.
The internet has become the bread and butter for all it seems, be it a thought on a freshly
brewing topic, or an attempt to try something new; it is all there on social media.
Photography too has picked up the pace. Despite being locked within the premises of their
dwelling places, many are seen to be inclined on taking photographs of all little things they
can see, in and around their surroundings. Log onto your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and
even Whatsapp; you will be served with a buffet of creativity of all sorts. Dance, singing,
painting, making things out of thrown away items, playing an instrument; videos of all such
activities are available on any social media platform. It has become an excellent means of
sharing one's knowledge and encouraging others to do the same.
In fact, the mental health that is a burning topic of discussion and attention these days is
taken care of greatly because of this kind of sharing. People who have any knowledge on
how to deal with depression and similar other things are sharing trivia on how one could
cope with it. Exercise, yoga, and all forms of physical workouts are being shared too so that
no matter where an individual is, he/she might not lose touch with the essence of living.
Concerning mental health, it should be added that several videos of individuals singing and
playing music from their balconies just to make the people in the neighbourhood feel happy
were making their rounds on the internet. It was an absolutely uplifting experience; it gave
one and all a sense of belonging. It assured those who felt hopeless that they were not
alone in this; there were people who were standing with them.
We have actually witnessed humanity come to life during this lockdown. While the doctors,
nurses and the corona warriors were doing their bit in the hospitals and care centres; some
groups were taking care of the individuals in their localities or as far as they could reach.
Surely everyone wanted to stay safe themselves, but at the same time, they tried to help
out the others.
In a nutshell, it could be said that the lockdown has been a learning experience and quite a
productive time for all. It was indeed a time that changed human relations because now
people were ready to go out there and help strangers. It was indeed a time where creativity
knew no limits, and it was indeed a time when people were more willing to share their
knowledge with others and abstain from being self-centred.
