Physically active and fit during lockdown
It still is hard to believe how our life has drastically been altered since the dawn of the pandemic. It
has been somewhat challenging to adjust to this new way of life; nonetheless, all are putting in their
efforts to fit themselves into this ‘new normal’. The lockdown phase was perhaps the toughest time
for everyone alike. Be it an infant or an aged person, staying within the constraints of the house for
prolonged days is not an easy task.
It is quite a paradox that the government had ordered the citizens of India to stay indoors to prevent
us from falling ill and staying indoors is causing a lot of people to fall mentally sick. Surely, the illness
is not as severe as the Covid-19, but it does have enough capacity to disrupt the normal health
condition of an individual massively. Mental health was the most important issue during this time.
People were not being able to accept this situation psychologically and most people considered this
as a sort of imprisonment. The feeling of an infringement upon freedom of movement was affecting
people in thinking wrongly. The little children were seen getting more and more restless while the
elderly lost their temper and got agitated easily. I too was becoming a victim of this. I too started
getting irritated at little things and felt that my parents were breathing on my shoulders all the time.
It is good to have a house with a hundred percent attendance of the family members, but I always
feel everything in life is good only until it is served in limitation. Slowly, I was losing interest in doing
anything at all. There also came a time when I would do absolutely nothing at all throughout the day.
But fortunately, a friend of mine came to my aid. She suggested to me that I should start meditation.
Hesitant in the beginning, I did, however, give it a thought and made an effort to practice it.
For the first few days, it was a mammoth task, but as the days passed, I grew inclined towards it. I no
longer had to set the alarm to wake up. Now, my body clock has started working promptly. With
each passing day, I became more focused and energetic. I then decided to extend my attention to
fitness. I started doing aerobics and yoga on alternate days, followed by meditation in the early
hours of the morning.
The loss of all the flab that I had accumulated towards the beginning of the lockdown was becoming
evident. In the meanwhile, I had developed an attraction to watch videos on how to maintain health
during this pandemic. Taking the advice from the various health gurus, I started reading e-books on
positivity. The meditation and yoga were great ways to keep me calm; while the exercises continued
to help me stay fit and in proper shape. Eventually, it was my diet that went through a sea change.
I started to eat nutritious food. Earlier I used to ask my mother to make me various mouth-watering
treats which were rich in calories. But, after I put my mind into staying healthy and fit, I decided to
stay away from all of this. So it is now more of juices, fruits, nuts and other such food items. I no
longer eat two heavy meals in a day instead I eat five moderately light meals. This helped me in
staying energetic and doing much more work than I did earlier.
Ever since I adopted this way of life during the lockdown it has made me a happier and more
satisfied person.
