NEYYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY – Kerala
Neyyar wildlife sanctuary is located along the south-east part of the Western Ghats in the
Vattiyoorkavu district of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary in
1958.
Flora
Vegetation cover: West coast tropical evergreen forest, Southern wet mixed-deciduous forest,
Southern hilltop tropical evergreen forest, Southern sub-tropical savannahs, Southern tropical hill
forests and reed brakes.
Important tree species: Kindal tree, jambun, silk cotton tree, Ceylon ironwood, Indian kino tree, etc.
Fauna
Tiger, barking deer, sloth bear, Nilgiri tahr leopard, sambar, elephant, bonnet macaque, Nilgiri
langur, etc.
Avian Fauna
Indian Cuckoos, Indian Hill Mynas, kingfishers, little egrets, little cormorants, white-breasted water
hen, Brahminy kites, darters, etc.
Getting there
Trivandrum International Airport about 40km away is the closest airport to Neyyar wildlife
sanctuary. Nearest rail head is at Neyyattinkara Railway Station around 20km away. Closest major
railway station is the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station (approx. 32km). Nearest bus
stations are at Kattakkada (11km) and at Thiruvananthapuram (30km). Regular KSRTC buses are
available from Trivandrum.
Tourist information
Tourists can enjoy comfortable stay at the Forest Department’s Inspection Bungalow, Irrigation
Department dormitory and rest house at Neyyar. Dormitory at Kombai and Agasthya House (KTDC)
can also be availed for accommodation.
Nature trail, boating on Neyyar River, lion safari by bus and visit to the Neyyar Elephant
Rehabilitation Centre, Crocodile rehabilitation centre and Deer park are popular pastimes of the
tourists.
Tourists can also enjoy one or two day trekking expedition with overnight halt at the camp house in
Meenmytty. Avoid wearing strong perfumes and flashy clothes during your visit to the sanctuary. Do
respect the serenity and the silence of the forest and refrain from disturbing the wildlife by making
any kind of noise.
