Negative sides of lockdown
Negative sides of lockdown
The word 'lockdown' brings a frown on most people's faces because of obvious reasons; it has been
one of the most trying times ever to have been encountered by people. The corona virus has
perhaps become the greatest foe of humanity in the year 2020. It has brought about a sea change
not just in the living conditions but also in the living styles of the masses at large.
One of the biggest problems faced by people during the nationwide lockdown is the loss of jobs.
Complete halting of the manufacturing operations in the factories lead to closing down of many
companies, both big and small. No work meant no pay for a lot of individuals; this led to a lot of
collateral damage in the form of suicides and homicides too. It was spine chilling to get news of
people either ending their lives or killing themselves and their family members because they were
unable to provide food, medicines and the basic amenities to their families. Long periods of curbs
and lockdowns have adversely affected the country’s economic recovery and employment
prospects. It is estimated that around 5.9 million white collar workers lost their jobs between May
and August 2020.
'Work from home' was another alternative that many companies introduced to keep their
operations running during the lockdown. This was absolutely safe, but it was convenient only to a
certain extent. Initially, everyone thought that work-from-home would be easy, but soon reality hit
them. Employees soon began to understand that work-from-home was much more complicated
than working in an office. One of the biggest problems of work-from-home was the increased
working hours. Now, there was no boundary between personal and professional life. Many
employees had to work extra hours, and sometimes they had to even work during the weekends.
Internet connectivity was another issue while working from home. The load on the internet was so
much that the internet providers had to slow down the speed of the internet after a particular user
had consumed a certain amount of data. This greatly hampered the optimum working speed.
Glitches in internet connections because of increased data usage became a big-time problem faced
by everyone. The work which could be done smoothly and without any disturbance was now taking
a lot of extra time to complete.
Another challenge that most people faced while working from home was sharing their laptop,
computer or smart phones with the children for their online classes. Since schools were shut online
classes were the only option for the schools through which they can teach their students. Everyone
in the family couldn't use the gadgets simultaneously. This further created a lot of commotion and
unrest in some families.
The increased screen time for the children to maintain regular attendance slowly started affecting
their health. The children complained of eyesight and hearing problems as almost all children used
headphones or earphones for their classes. Further, the small children who were also attending
online classes needed at least one of the parents to always be by their side to assist them. This led to
enhanced difficulties in the daily chores of the house.
As everyone was living under a kind of house arrest and social distancing needed to be practiced,
there was no way that the domestic help could come for their regular work. The family members
had to carry out the household chores all by themselves. Since, a parent (who in most cases is the
mother), had to spend time in front of the screen along with the child, every work around the house
got delayed. This upset the daily schedule of eating and other chores comparatively, leading to
unhealthy living routines.
This is how one negative thing led to another one during this lockdown period, thereby holistically
disrupting the peace and happiness of the society altogether.
