LOHABARRACK SALT WATER CROCODILE SANCTUARY - South Andaman Islands
Lohabarrack Salt Water Crocodile Sanctuary is located in South Andaman Islands, to the north
of Marine National Park which is situated in Wandoor. The sanctuary starts from the Tytler’s ghat
which is approximately 2 km away from Port Mount School. It is situated on the left side of
Andaman Trunk Road (ATR).
This sanctuary was established in the year 1983 for the conservation of the salt water crocodiles of
that region. It is named so after an adjacent village.
Flora
Tropical evergreen forests and mangroves are the primary vegetation cover of the sanctuary.
Fauna
Flagship species: Salt water crocodile
Other species: Marine turtle, Himalayan Palm civet, Wild boar, spotted deer, Dolphins, water
monitor, etc.
Avian Fauna
White bellied sea Eagle, crested serpent Eagle, serpent Eagle, Harriers, etc.
Getting there
The nearest airport to Lohabarrack Salt Water Crocodile Sanctuary is in Port Blair. From Port
Blair one can hire different boats to reach the sanctuary. The reserve can also be easily accessed
from the Dundas point jetty and Bambooflat jetty.
Accommodation is available in the form of camping at Dundas point and at the adjoining villages.
Better quality accommodation is available in Port Blair.
The visitors to the sanctuary can obtain the entry permit from DCF (Wildlife-1), stationed at Haddo.
The sandy beaches of the sanctuary are the ideal places to spot the salt water crocodiles and the
marine turtles. The creeks of Lohabarrack Salt Water Crocodile Sanctuary are the ideal habitat of
the salt water crocodiles and so are the best spots to view the magnificent crocodiles.
