Lockdown proved catastrophic for india
Indians are always globally appreciated for their ability to cope up with all types of situations. In fact,
towards the beginning of the pandemic, our nation was considered a great performer because of its
ability to limit the number of positive cases. But it is only Indians who can understand the kind of
difficulties and hardships they had to face because of this invisible enemy.
The advice of social distancing was an acceptable thing by one and all, but the ‘nationwide
lockdown’ was unwelcome news. Though it was imposed only to ensure the safety of the masses, its
repercussions had deeply damaging effects on the household of every common man. The foremost
issue was the hoarding of things. People, who were financially sound, bought large amounts of
things of basic necessity; while the not so rich were left deprived. Several places even witnessed
fights and disputes, people were literally quarrelling to get their share of things.
Some shopkeepers, as a result, began to limit the sale; that is, for example, they would not give
more than two packets of milk per customer. This was to make sure that more people got the
products, and only the affluent did not get an abundance of things. Also, this became the need of
the hour because the production of food and other necessary items was nil in most cases. Hence,
only those manufactured goods that were left from the recent past could be sold over the counter.
Next was the misery of the migrant workers who had come in from other states to earn their living.
They not only lost their jobs, but also their place of stay; their state was reduced to starvation and
homelessness. The suspension of all types of trade and business was only leading the country to a
hopeless economic situation. There was no production and therefore, no sale. Companies gradually
began laying-off employees, and that increased the sufferings of the people. They had almost no
money to sustain themselves at a time like this when they needed extra cash in hand to be able to
stock things up.
The schools faced a major jolt with this ominous ‘lockdown’; the teachers were put to the test with
their technical knowledge and skills. It is a sad truth that not all teachers are aware of how to use the
latest technological means to teach. While they struggled to learn and use these things
simultaneously, the parents began protesting against the school fees. They argued that since the
children were not using the school property in any way, only the tuition fees ought to be levied by
the school authorities. Everything seemed to be in utter chaos.
Additionally, the people in these two months began to feel claustrophobic, which increased cases of
domestic violence and ill mental health. From children to elderly people, everyone was experiencing
excessive trauma and psychological pressure as a result of being confined to their houses for such a
long period. Individuals everywhere seemed to become more and more impatient with the altered
way of life. The sights across the country were very sorry ones, with people craving for food and
shelter. Abandoned senior citizens, beggars and hungry children in the streets, all of these had only
left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.
Along with all of these disturbances, another new social vice came to the forefront – people were
treating corona patients with utter disgust and contempt. While on the one hand, we could see the
noble work of good souls trying to provide love and care to their fellow citizens; on the other side,
we could see people refusing to consider humans as humans. Anyone in the locality who was either
diagnosed or even taken for testing of Covid-19 was treated as untouchables. Undoubtedly, social
distancing was asked to be practiced, but sadly, this distanced people from each other, even
mentally. There were cases of families being driven out of localities, and the worst part was when
the last rites of covid-19 patients were denied. Television channels showed heartbreaking scenes of
human dead-bodies being piled up and burnt as if they were nothing.
Despite India getting accolades for following one of the harshest lockdowns in the world; the Indians
will always remember this as an unhappy episode of their lives. There is no doubt in the fact that the
lockdown only proved to be catastrophic for the millions of Indians.
