Lockdown inspired you to do many new things
Lockdown inspired you to do many new things

I always believe that there is something good in everything, and this belief of mine was reaffirmed during the pandemic. Surely, it is hard to believe this ideology, but there is justification to this statement. It is true that the lockdown ordered by the government, as a preventive measure for the Covid-19 situation, did hurt the masses in many ways, but there were a lot of individuals who benefitted from it as well. I am one of them.

Everything everywhere seemed to be engulfed in chaos during the lockdown. However, if we focus our attention to the little things in life, our perception will change greatly. This can be held true for students around the globe, and especially those in our country. Hiring tutors and going for tuition classes has become a normal practice. More than the children, the parents and guardians depend on these teachers outside the school to look after the education of their wards.

I am grateful for the lockdown because it left me no option but to become self sufficient in my studies. Of course, I need to thank my mother as well because she helped me a lot too. So long I was being helped by my private tutors. My normal daily routine was hopping from one tutor to another after my school. Then return home around 9 o’clock at night.

After returning home and having my dinner, I would again sit to complete the home work of my private teachers. It was utterly exhausting, but at that time, no other option came to my parent’s minds. My friends were also doing the same thing. Often at school, we would share stories of how tired we would all get by the end of the day. Even our sleep time had to be curtailed because of this. Fortunately during the lockdown when going to the private tutors was not possible self-help became the new norm.

Initially I felt lost; did not know where to start and how to start. So, my mother helped me out. She taught me how to study by myself. Taking notes, marking the important parts and writing down difficult words, were some of the initial things I learnt. She advised me that I should look up the meaning of the words in the dictionary simultaneously and write down beside the words. This was useful because later when I would revise the chapter I could revise the meanings of these words easily and my vocabulary would increase in the process.

I used to read the chapters in detail with careful attention and do as directed by my mother. Slowly I realized that self study was not that difficult. With a little more effort I mastered the art of making small questions from within the chapter. I would write these down in a separate notebook and when I had mastered the chapter well, I would attempt answering these questions. In this way, I found I was actually able to understand the chapters better. I could now solve the exercises at the back of the chapters very easily and the best part was that I forgot much less now.

When closely analysed, one of the greatest gifts of the lockdown for me is my newfound confidence. Being able to tackle one of the biggest challenges in my life efficiently, I now feel more confident about myself. This confidence is not just limited to my education but has overflowed into my personal life too. Because of the knowledge I gathered I became more sure and alert about things happening around me.

I am now more enthusiastic in trying out new things, which is why I have learnt to take care of my ailing grandmother at home. Previously, my mother did not allow me to do anything for my granny who has suffered a cardiac arrest. My recent interest in reading about various things on the internet

has helped me know how to deal with such patients. Now, I am aware of the kind of food she should not take and also that a little physical exercise, like walking, is helpful for her. Spending time with her and keeping her happy are other means. I have also learnt about ways to keep her free from stress. When my mother saw my understanding of the issue, she now allows me to do things for granny by myself.

One big lesson of life that I have learnt is that we may not always have provisions to seek help from others. So being self sufficient is the only way out during such times. I am now confident that the experience of becoming self-reliant during the lockdown will greatly help me to pull myself out of any difficult situation.
