Lockdown all members in house your reactions
During the lock down period all the members of the family were in the house: were you happy or
felt claustrophobic. Explain why.
The silver lining to this black cloud of ‘Lockdown’ was perhaps to have your family around you. I feel
so bad for all those people who were isolated from their families either because they tested positive
with the virus; or because they were in their workplace far away from their loved ones. It surely was
more difficult for them. I consider myself fortunate to have all the people in my life at an arm’s
distance and under the same roof during the lockdown period.
The lockdown period can be compared to an emotional roller coaster ride for everyone. While there
were days when people were found enjoying their time in the house; there were times when this
feeling of ‘house arrest’ seemed to be suffocating. In a situation like this, being around your kindred
was essential.
I come from a joint family and therefore the lockdown period did not make me feel lonely at all.
Although I did miss my school and friends there was no lack of activities and excitement. It was
actually difficult to get bored when you have your house full of fun loving people.
It was surprising to see the kind of energy my grandparents possess; even at the age of 70 and 75,
they were not very different from all the children in the house. In fact, sometimes they were the
ones who kept us entertained. Altogether we are about 12 individuals - my grandpa, grandma, two
uncles, two aunties, my parents, two cousins, my brother and I. It is not very tough to imagine the
kind of atmosphere within the premises of such a house.
One of the biggest advantages of living in such a family is that you never feel suppressed by difficult
times. Every evening we cousins got together in our compound to play all sorts of games. We
quarrelled and yelled at each other, but at the end everything was good and we had a lot of fun. On
some days we would include our parents or uncles and aunties to play along with us. On some other
days, we children were given the task of sanitising the entire house with the help of spray bottles;
that too was quite an interesting task.
When our parents realised that we were feeling bad about not being able to go to school, they
decided that all the children in the house were to sit together to study. My younger aunt, who is a
school teacher, had the responsibility to assist us in our studies. This made the study time enjoyable
too. To some extent, it gave the feeling of a school.
Our meal time was nothing less than a party daily. Not only were the dishes enjoyable, but when the
whole family sat at the table it always appeared like a feast. I am not sure if a lot of families share
fun talks over the table, but my family does. In some way or the other a funny topic would come up
and my elder uncle who is a prankster ended up making it hilarious. And then on some days, my
grandmother showed her disagreement and we finished our meal, silently.
Of course we did have our share of sad and unhappy moments. But perhaps the bond between each
of us in the family is so strong that we were able to rise above the difficult and depressing moments.
This helped me greatly in staying positive even when the whole world faced such tough times. I am
thankful that I have a family which did not let me feel any negativity during the lockdown period, but
encouraged me to carry on with my life positively.
