Kolkata Gate English Essay
The Kolkata Gate is a new addition to the city of Kolkata. It is basically a circular hanging restaurant positioned on four arc-shaped steel pillars. The hanging restaurants in Malaysia and Visitor's Gallery in Eiffel Tower in Paris have inspired the government authorities of Kolkata to come up with this iconic structure.
The Kolkata Gate is situated in the Newtown area of Kolkata, at Narkelbagan crossing near Rabindra Tirtha theatre hall. It was conceptualized by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO). This beautiful structure is developed as a part of Newtown's beautification scheme. The idea for this new structure was conceptualised in the year 2010. It received approval in May 2015 from the State Government. The construction of this hanging restaurant started on 6 March 2017. The design of the Gate was done by M/s Vector Designs, a Pune-based architecture firm. The total cost of the Kolkata Gate is around Rs.25 crore.
The entire structure is made from 70 tons of steel. Each of the arc-shaped steel pillars weighs around 65 metric tonnes. This gate will be about 55 meters in height. The circular viewing gallery-cum-hanging restaurant will be located at a height of 25 metres from the ground. A lift is provided on one side of the Gate for the people to reach the restaurant above.
The circular viewing gallery-cum-hanging restaurant is made of steel and strengthened glass. One can get a panoramic view of the township from this gallery. Various photographs of West Bengal cultural events, with adaptation, is used to decorate the interior of the viewing gallery. The exterior of the gallery is decorated with beautiful lights. The logo of 'Biswa Bangla' is situated on the outer-central part of the viewing gallery.
According to the Minister of Urban and Urban Development of Kolkata, the Kolkata Gate is an arrangement that will provide pleasure to the common man. Let's hope that in the coming years, this beautiful hanging restaurant also becomes an iconic tourist destination in the city of Kolkata.
