Khelo India School Games Essay English
Even though India is the second most populous country in the world, it has still failed to become a sports super power in the world. One of the prime reasons for this is the unavailability of opportunities and sports facilities to talented sports persons in the rural areas and from the backward classes. It is for this reason that Khelo India School Games (KISG) programme has been introduced in our country to inspire and identify talented sports persons and provide them with highest level of training and best sporting framework.
The Khelo India programme was introduced by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. The first edition of KISG was inaugurated by Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister on India, in New Delhi at the famous Indira Gandhi Stadium. Through this programme, the sporting authorities in India aim to establish India as a great sporting nation. The Khelo India programme will help in restoring the sports culture in the country at the grass-root level by developing a strong infrastructure for all sports played in India.
The first Khelo India School Games was conducted under the Khelo India programme to showcase the great sporting potential that our country has. The event was conducted in Under-17 age category across 16 disciplines. This sporting event was organized from 31 January to 8 February 2018. Around 5,000 school children from around 7 union territories and 29 states participated in the first edition of KISG. It is estimated that approximately 199 gold medals, 199 silver medals and 275 bronze medals were awarded at this event.
The earlier three different sporting schemes in India, such as the National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS), Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) and Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS) was combined under one programme as Khelo India School Games.
Through KISG, the Ministry of Sports in India will scrutinize young talents from schools in different disciplines and train them to become future champion sportspersons. The High-Powered Committed will identify potential candidates at different levels in priority sports. For 8 years, each of these talented youngsters will be provided with an annual financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh. This will help in preventing the youths, especially the ones residing in the disturbed and backward areas of the country, from going astray in disruptive or unproductive activities but harness their potential in building a great sporting nation.
Khelo India School Games is a great step by the Indian Government to encourage sportsmanship spirit and develop awareness and cognizance regarding physical fitness among the youngsters of India. Provided it is taken forward in the right spirit India should be able to compete in quite a number of Olympic events in the near future. There should be no dearth of talent if a systematic, proper and thorough talent hunt is carried out.
We look forward to hold our national tricolour high in the Olympic Games 2024! Khelo India Khelo!!!.
