INTERVIEW ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - North Andaman

Interview Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the southwest of North Andaman. Covering an area of about 13,100 ha, this sanctuary is considered to be Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ largest island sanctuary. Gazetted a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1987 and was opened to tourists in 1997.

Flora
Forest type: Andaman Semi-Evergreen, Andaman Tropical Evergreen, Mangrove and Littoral.
Flora species: Dipterocarpus alatus, Sterculia campanulata, Artocarpus lakoocha, Dipterocarpus alatus, Pterocarpus dalbergioides, etc.

Fauna
Feral elephants are the prominent mammal species of Interview Island Wildlife Sanctuary. These elephants are the offspring of the trained elephants who were earlier brought here by a Calcutta based timber company for its forest works. The elephants were then subsequently abandoned when the company’s business failed in 1950. When food in the sanctuary becomes scarce, these feral elephants swim across to other islands in search of food.
Other less prominent animal species include Andaman Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Bats, Rodents, etc.

Avian Fauna
White bellied swifts, Andaman Hawk Owl, Andaman Wood pigeon, Brown Coucal, etc.

Getting there
The nearest airport to Interview Island sanctuary is at Port Blair. The only way to reach this enchanted island sanctuary is by boarding a private boat from Mayabunder jetty.

Tourist Information
The foreign tourists are not allowed to stay overnight on the island. Even for the Indian visitors staying options in the island is very scanty. Hence, the best thing would be to stay in Port Blair and visit the sanctuary by making a day trip. For this one has to start at first light in the morning.
The best place to spot Interview Island Wildlife Sanctuary is at the perennial freshwater pool located inside a low cave. This cave is situated at the southern tip of the Interview Island. Legend has it that this freshwater pool has not bottom.
