If i was the labour minister
If i was the labour minister

The spread of the Covid-19 virus and the unplanned lockdown have created a debacle in the lives of the millions of the migrant labourers, who are part of the informal sector. The entire nation was upset at the way the plight of these migrant workers was handled. If I was the labour minister of my country then I would have taken the necessary measures to help these labourers and alleviate their misery during the lockdown.

As a labour minister, my first responsibility would be to maintain a national record of all the workers who are employed in different states. This would be irrespective of the occurrence of any pandemic. It would largely help me in keeping a track of all the migrant workers so that in case of any unforeseen circumstance, I can have them protected and taken care of. After all, a leader is only as successful as his subordinates.

While I would do all this during normal times; I would also be prepared for difficult times that, at most times, come suddenly. Given a situation such as the Covid-19 pandemic, I would have these records as my back up. Since I would already have an account of the total number of the migrant workers and which workers are working in which state, it would not be difficult for me to track them down. Post this tracking down, I would arrange for the transportation of these people to their respective villages.

Allowing the passage of all kinds of transport while maintaining the safety rules for the pandemic, would be my another priority. I would have used the community halls, stadiums and the like to temporarily accommodate the migrant workers while they are waiting to get back to their native places. It is understandable that I would be in need of funds and materials for the purpose. So, I would use social media and my other sources to ask for donations from the general public for this purpose and use them rationally and sincerely. I would also instruct the police not to harass these helpless migrant workers but assist them in whatever ways possible.

Another item on my priority list would be getting the migrant workers tested for Covid-19 so that the spread of the virus is checked. I, as the labour minister, would also try to set up quarantine centres, particularly for the workers and their families. This would help restrict their movement within the state and keep a check on spreading of the virus. Medical facilities would be made available for these builders of our nation free of cost. I would also make sure that soap and other hand-washing facilities are provided at places where these workers are temporarily put up, to reduce the risk of community transmission.

Myriads of migrant labourers lost their source of income after the Covid-19 lockdown was imposed throughout the country. So, as a labour minister, I would make petitions to the government of both the centre and the respective States to provide some financial aid for the migrant labourers. This would sustain them till the time they again get back to their places of work.

These are some of the steps that I would take as a labour minister of my country to resolve the plight of the migrant workers during the lockdown. I am sure holding an important position such as the labour minister in our country is not an easy job. Therefore, I would act according to priority, putting the worst hit of the lot first; making sure no one is neglected or left out.
