BARREN ISLAND WILDLIFE SANCTUARY - Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Barren Island Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Andaman Sea, towards the east of the Andaman Islands. Along with the Andaman and Nicobar Island, Barren Island is also a part of the Indian Union Territory. The wildlife sanctuary was established in the year 1977 to preserve the wildlife and the eco-system of the region. Covering an area of about 8 sq km, the sanctuary is home to dugongs and dolphins.

Flora
Mostly sodden deciduous forests.

Fauna
Primarily marine species such as fishes, dolphins, turtles and dugongs.

Getting there
The closest airport is the Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. From Port Blair one can hire a boat or a yacht to reach Barren Island Wildlife Sanctuary.

The tourists can find different hotels, resorts and guest houses in Port Blair with different budget options.

Scuba diving is the best way to watch the marine wildlife of the sanctuary. Scuba diving tourists are advised not to venture far and wide into the water but stay within the prescribed territories.
