ABOHAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY- Punjab
Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary is a private reserve that is spread over thirteen villages in the state of
Punjab. It covers an area of about of 186.5 sq. km. and is regarded to be the biggest Blackbuck Deer
open wildlife sanctuary in Asia. It was first notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and again re-
notified in the year 2000.
Flora
Forest type: tropical dry mixed deciduous forest.
Major tree species: siris, neem, babul, Indian Rosewood, white cedar, jhand, etc
Fauna
Flagship species: black buck deer.
Other species: Wild boar, porcupines, black-naped hare, blue bull, jackal, jungle cat, etc

How to reach
Sahnewal Airport in Ludhiana and Sahnewal Airport in Ludhiana are the closest airports to Abohar
Wildlife Sanctuary. Abohar railway station is the nearest railway terminal. On reaching the Abohar
city, the tourists can hire buses, taxis or private cars to reach the sanctuary. Abohar Sanctuary is
situated on NH 10 and NH 15 and is well linked with Amritsar, Bathinda and other nearby major
cities of the state.
Tourist Information
There are hardly any staying facilities within the sanctuary. The visitors can find quality budget
hotels, resorts and guesthouses in the city of Abohar. Nature trail and bird watching are popular
tourist activities in the region. Visitors can visit the tribal villages in the sanctuary to get a close
glimpse of a tribal life and culture.
Black buck is the State Animal of Punjab and is perceived to be sacred by the Bishnoi community in
the sanctuary. Therefore, the Bishnois have joined hands with the forest authorities to protect the
black buck and other wildlife of reserve from reckless poaching and hunting. For information about
